Barça Femení return to Champions League action on Wednesday as they travel to Italy to face AS Roma in the second matchday of the 2026/27 UEFA Women’s Champions League.
After an exciting opening-night victory over Paris FC, Barça Femení will be looking to continue their European title defence when they take on Roma at the Stadio Tre Fontane.
The match kicks off at 18:45 CEST on Wednesday, September 30.
Barça arrive in Rome with confidence
The European champions made a strong start to their Champions League campaign last week, beating Paris FC 5-2 at the Estadi Johan Cruyff.
Barça had to respond after falling behind early, but Pere Romeu’s side showed their attacking quality and turned the game around. Kerolin, Clara Serrajordi, Ewa Pajor and Caroline Graham Hansen were all on the scoresheet, with Pajor finding the net twice.
The result gave Barça three valuable points to begin their defence of the trophy.
The team also comes into the Roma clash after another win in Liga F. Barça defeated Logroño United 2-0 at Las Gaunas on Saturday, with Mayssa Baha and Patri Guijarro scoring the goals.
The game also brought a special moment for Mayssa, who became the youngest goalscorer for Barça’s first team since the women’s section became officially part of the club in 2002. Even more importantly, Aitana Bonmatí made her first appearance of the season after recovering from her ankle problem.
Roma looking for a response
Roma also began their European campaign with a draw, playing out a 0-0 draw against OH Leuven in Belgium.
It was a frustrating opening night for the Italian side, who were unable to find a way through despite having opportunities. They will now return home knowing that a positive result against the reigning European champions would give their campaign a major boost.
Playing at home could also give Roma an extra push. Barça will therefore need to be prepared for a different challenge from the one they faced against Paris FC.
Another meeting between familiar opponents
This will not be the first time Barça and Roma have met in the Champions League.
The two teams faced each other in the competition last season, with Barça producing an impressive 4-0 victory in Rome in October 2025.
That night, goals from Esmee Brugts, Kika Nazareth, Alexia Putellas and Caroline Graham Hansen secured a convincing victory for the Blaugrana.
However, past results will mean little when the two teams step onto the pitch this time around. Roma will be determined to make home advantage count, while Barça will want to show once again why they are the reigning European champions.
A busy week for Barça
The Roma match comes at the beginning of an important week for Barça Femení.
After travelling to Italy on Wednesday, the team will return to Barcelona for a huge Liga F fixture against Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou on October 4.
That makes squad management particularly important for Pere Romeu. The coach already rotated heavily against Logroño, fielding a starting XI with an average age of just 22, before introducing experienced players such as Patri Guijarro and Ewa Pajor from the bench.
With Roma followed by the Clásico, Barça will need to balance freshness and experience while maintaining their high standards in both competitions.
What to expect in Rome
Barça are likely to want control of the ball from the opening minutes, while Roma can be expected to make the match difficult, particularly in front of their home supporters.
The Blaugrana will have plenty of attacking options, with Pajor, Graham Hansen and Kerolin among the players who have already made an impact in Europe this season. The return of Aitana also gives Rome another reason to be concerned about Barça’s attacking and midfield options.
But the key could be patience.
Roma showed in their opening match that they can keep a clean sheet, and Barça may have to work hard to break down a disciplined defensive structure.
The mission is clear
Three points in Rome would put Barça in a strong position after the opening two matchdays of the league phase.
The 2026/27 Champions League has a new 18-team league-phase format, with the top four teams qualifying directly for the quarter-finals and teams finishing fifth through 12th entering a playoff round.
For the holders, however, the immediate focus is simple: another European night, another difficult opponent, and another opportunity to take a step towards defending their crown.
Roma are waiting.
